Phased Array Antenna Patterns

Thread Summary

The user asked about the difference between beam angle resolution and the smallest beam steering angle in a linear phased array antenna. The final answer clarifies that the smallest beam steering angle is determined by the phase shifter resolution and the number of elements, and suggests using a phased array calculator like the MATLAB phased array toolbox for further exploration.

Hi,

The article Phased Array Antenna Patterns - Part 3: Sidelobes and Tapering  written by Peter Delos, Bob Broughton, and John Kraft says that: For a linear array with N elements spaced at a half wavelength, the resolution of the beam angle is calculated by the equation below:

I'm confused about the difference between the beam angle resolution and the smallest beam steering angle. If I wanna implement a real phased array antenna by using a phase shifter for each antenna element, what is the smallest beam steering angle I can achieve (i.e., 6 bits)? Is that the same value as the beam angle resolution in the article ?

Please answer my question

  • The smallest beam steering angle defines how finely you can point the beam.  This is dependent on both the phase/time shift resolution and number of elements in the array, as shown in the equation.  I recommend a phased array calculator, like the MATLAB phased array toolbox, to further experiment with these concepts.

  • Thank you for your answer. I have test the MATLAB phased array toolbox but I still don't understand clearly these concepts. For example, if I have a 6-bit phase shifter,  a linear array with 32 elements spaced at a half wavelength, what is the smallest beam steering angle I can steer ?. Following your equation, I calculate the smallest beam steering angle is 0.056 degree. But how can I achieve it in reality, what is my config of phase shifter for each element ? From my perspective for phased array antenna, if I wanna steer an angle for a phased array, I need to set up a progressive phase/time for each element in the array, so the smallest phase shifter I can set up for 6-bit PS is 5.625 degree. I don't quite understand how can I achieve the final beam steering angle 0.056 degree if the phase resolution for each PS is 5.625 degree. Please answer my question sir.
