synchronizing two adalm pluto rev c using an external clock

we have been trying to synchronise two pluto rev c version devices using a external clock of 40 Mhz and -10 dbm power but have been unable to do so. for the test we have used a matlab code along with communication toolbox for adalm pluto. in this code we are using a 61.44 mhz sampling frequency  and 10 mhz bandwidth lte signal and transmit through one pluto1 and receive through  pluto1 & pluto2 and finally time align the received signal with the input signal and calculate the NMSE. the clock is given to the clkin ufl port of pluto 1 and the clout of pluto 1 is connected to the clkin of pluto 2. the nmse of first pluto1'a transmit and receive is quite good as expected around -25 but the in case of the first pluto1'a transmit and 2nd pluto's receive  the nmse comes around 2 db. my question is our process correct? can the synchronization be done?
